Publicity for free/open source projects

I have an open source project running at the moment, mainly because I'm bored and it seemed a productive thing to do instead of watching the idiot box (which i still do too much). Anyway to the point I was wondering what I need to do to make people aware of it.

Banner advertising seems either ineffective (due to poor targeting) or too expensive.

I am looking for ideas for my project (see link at the bottom) and I want input from people who matter.

Many moons ago as a project I created a basic banner exchange server and I have recently wondered whether it would be worthwhile converting the site to an open source project banner exchange project to help others like me. I am wondering if there is another site already in existence or if there would be any interest in the idea - either way I want to know if it would be a waste of time.

Registering your project at places like freshmeat.net can help get more visibility. Sourceforge also I think.

That's beyond banner ads that you might trade off with other users.

Free publicity tool for Open Source Projects

In a previous post in this forum I mentioned my troubles in obtaining publicity for my open source game (Digital Tycoon ). I have attempted to solve this problem by creating a banner trader made only for open source/free projects.

To the point, for the site to have any effect I will need some other people using the service. If you know of anyone with a project that requires publicity could you point out to them:
The Open Source Banner Trader (http://www.freeasphost.co.uk/bannerxchange/)

Thanks for your reading
