I have NO idea what is going on. I just installed zenwalk 4.4.1, network worked right outta the install. Then i try aim, doesnt connect, mess around ALOT with the network. Go to my other pc which is running windows xp to read forums and the network is down on IT too! So i reset the router. Everything works great again.
Then it doesnt.. then I turn the router off and on again, and it works.. then it doesnt.. and so on and so on... i SUSPECT it might have something to do with GAIM, which doesnt connect sometimes, which is when i notice the network seems to go down as well. then again, i have gotten GAIM to work for a good long while, then i go to change some preferences, and it doesnt work. what gives?! this is really frustrating. thanks in advance
Please post the make and model of your model. When I used Google to respond to a different posting on LQ, there where numerous forum postings found on that user's model of router having a problem with lockups. Maybe using Gaim can help trigger it if you have the same router.
it is a Linksys WRV54G and i have it hooked up with cat5, not wireless. I had this set up working fine before in zenwalk/slackware/ubuntu etc just to note. also interesting thing i just noticed is that when i have gaim logged in, and im talkign to someone etc, and i go to web browse, i can't access any internet website but i can still talk to the person on GAIM, and no we are not directly connected
That isn't the make of Router that I was thinking of. If you aren't using the wireless features, does that mean that it isn't secured? Regardless of the problem you are seeing, it might be a good idea to do so or to unscrew the antennae from the back of the device to deny other wireless users access to your LAN traffic. I wonder if you might be seeing to many hits on the router overwelming it's internal table. This is just a guess on my part.
You might try downloading a firmware update for the router. I did google for "wrv54g gaim router" and didn't find messages on a similar problems however. Which IM protocol do you use? Maybe forwarding the ports that the protocol uses might help.
