I installed VL 4.0 without any graphical interface, just the console. I downloaded then XFree86 4.3.0, compiled it, downloaded the blackbox did the same thing, edited XF86Config...
Now. I type startx and I get to the menu where I can select Fluxbox?!, iceWM?!, Xterm?!, I can go back to console and I can shutdown. Dunno where those selections about xterm, flux and iceWM came... I haven't installed anything like that...
If I select any of those selections, it just brings me back to the menu, except the Go back to console and Shutdown...
I don't know how to edit this menu, so it'll only show me 3 options:
Blackbox,
Console,
Shutdown.
Hi, did that, didnt work, at startx I still get kicked into the that menu...
Then I edited the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file, still was the same... I'm clueless...
Now I'm installi XFCE to test it, I'd like to have edit the menu to this:
Blackbox
XFCE
Edit this menu
Exit stage left
Shutdown the system.
Uninstall or disable any display managers such as kdm, gdm or xdm. You don't need those if you want to use an .xinitrc file. My .xinitrc file:
Code:
# Celeron 850 box "tinwhistle" user fancy .xinitrc file
# Start the stuff I want to run when I startx
# The artwiz-fonts sometimes conflict with your locale settings. To get
# them to work you may have to put the following at the beginning of your
# .xinitrc file
# export LC=C
# export LC_ALL=C
# Set the background for fluxbox
# Esetroot ~/backgrounds/linux.png &
# Start gkrellm and put it in the slit
gkrellm -w &
# This will run a screensaver as your background
# /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/hopalong -root &
# Start the screensaver daemon
# xscreensaver --no-splash &
xscreensaver &
# Finally, I start my window manager
exec fluxbox
# exec kde
# exec gnome-session
I have edited the /home/me/.xinitrc file and now in it is only "exec blackbox" and it doesnt work...
It would be great if I could boot directy to blackbox with startx, but it would be cooler if I could just edited that menu and set it to my selections... like I stated above.
If you will uninstall xdm, kdm or gdm, whichever one that is, that will stop as they ignore .xinitrc and look at another file......
You are running some sort of display manager which you obviously don't want.
If you are actually looking to use it, look for other dotx or dotX files (.x<anything else> or .X<anything else>) that may be in your home directory with the entries you are seeing and add what you want in that config file.

How can I do this?
As root,
# mcedit /etc/XwmMenu.ini
scroll to the end. You should know what you have to do there.
Be carefull when you change anything because Xwmmenu is not bullet proff. Any syntax error will crash it.
