Well, I don't know Vector well (just loaded 4.0 two days ago on an ancient P166) but it is based on Slackware, so I believe any of the Slack packages will work for KDE and Gnome.
Also, Vector releases their SOHO version with them included, I believe, but that might not be available for download.
I'm only trying it out since it is supposed to be good with old equipment, but I don't see much advantage over regular Slackware (which I use on my main machine).
Try Dropline GNOME (http://www.dropline.net/gnome/), it has a pretty easy installer which can pull the packages from the net or install from your hardisk if you download the packages first. I installed it on Vector 4 and it works great. Has quite a few apps included.
I log in to console mode, so to run GNOME I type gdm on the command line.
Distribution: Redhat since 5.2, Slackware since 9.0, Vector since 4.0

The above link to soho testing DOES NOT contains gnome desktop.
It only includes gnome libraries that are necessary to run gnome applications (evolution mainly).
Your choices:
- use kde from soho testing repository, but no gnome.
- use kde or gnome from slackware 9.0 CD. Works well on me.
- use kde or gnome/dropline from VL 4.0 deluxe (not available on-line).
- compile from scratch.
Distribution: Debian 3, 31r0, 4, slackware, DSL, RH8.0/7, MDK9/10, et al. Vista is cute but not Linux - I tried

Hey folks
I've very new to slackware/vector and the like and am trying to get my head around the install applications part. I'm comfortable using mandrake, Redhat etc but havent got the faintest foggyest bout Vector. I know of the presence of vasm, pkgtool/2 but am not very sure how to use them and would rather some expert instruction. I'm using Vector version 3.2.
Can anyone help me, even to just get a listing of the current installed apps and perhaps some others. Also how do these apps handle dependancies?
