Recompiled kernel-no video

Running VL4.0 download edition. I decided to recompile the kernel in order to get my SanDisk card reader to work. I took the kernel source tarball off of my Slackware 9.1 source cd (2.4.22), copied it to /usr/src on VL and then proceded to compile it according to DaOne's instructions:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=49035

Well, I must have forgotten something because after I was done and rebooted, I had no text on my screen, nothing. VL went through the whole boot up, but when it got done all I had was a blank monitor. It's not a big deal, since that was only a test installation of VL, but I'd like to know what I forgot, so I won't do it again.

Does anybody know what I forgot? Framebuffer support or something like that?

I used "make xconfig" to config the kernel, and followed DaOne's instructions to the tee, except for one thing; I ran "lilo -b /dev/fd0" before rebooting so I could make a lilo boot floppy.

Thnks in advance,
Jerry

This is Vector's own Kernel Compile howto:
http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=122
(note there is a step that is Vector specific)

as for your problem, I can't tell from the info you've given... it could be framebuffer, or something you changed in the video card support, or something that you've change that conflicts with your video card driver... etc...

But I would suggest instead of doing 'make menuconfig' (or xconfig) for your first compile, try 'make oldconfig' this will recompile the kernel with your original config, then see if it works. Once you have that starting point, you can start changing your config. Or just follow the above Vector FAQ which will do this as well (by copying the /boot/config file).

hope this helps...

EDIT: fixed typos
