Newbie - cannot install

Im trying to install vector SOHO 5.01 on my old machine, but it keeps saying that it cannot find the installation files on the CD rom, but the CD rom is already in there. PII 266MHz 4.2 gig 160RAM 4.2GIg

so i then try to install vector 4.3 instead (thinking my machine is less the mimium requirments) but i canty even load the console giving errors with something to do with the ram size less then the minimum.

Any help would be appriecated, really want to install 5.01

well for 5.01 its the first set up screen, then when i choose to start the install (for it to find the media on HD/CD) it says it cant find any. I am certan that the CD has the correct files in it.

for 4.3 it gives errors from the begiinging and so cant get to the first screen at all.

I'm clueless

I will try installing slackware tomorow but still really want to load vector

not to put down a linux distro but vector isn't much, only difference i see is slapt-get which you can have on slackware and a rubbish GUI for it. That and some minor things on the install, like X configuration.

I only have the CD rom not the iso, but how likely is it to be corrupt. I dont think there is anything i can do to install vector

youre not below the minimum requirements becasue ive got it running on a 100mhz box with 16mb ram--there's most likely a problem with the installation files.

the same thing has happened with slackware (now my whole disk has been formatted, had win 95 on it before) it just cant find the CD rom to install, so im thinking it must be something to do with my machine hardware. Its an old ibm aptiva

i have mananged to get slackware installed now. I tried changing the CD drive with a newer one and after rebooting many times it all worked fine. Now i am thinking whether i should reinstall Vector over slackware, which is faster????

in slackware does anyone know how i can increase the resolution to 1024*768 it currently on 648 or something and there are no other options (using KDE)

If you are using Vector 5.01 then this might be due to missing vertical & horizontal "sync" values in the x.org configuration files ...
small problem noticed before ...
U should be able to find something on this on the vector forum .

Maybe you can find the values in your monitor menu (monitor itself .. if it has one) .. I dont know the age of your system .
Or of course monitor manual if you still have it .

look for resultion in

/etc/X11/xorg.com

amd as far Slack Vs Vector is concerned
Vector is a fine tuned version of slackware so i find it litle faster, but with slack i like its simplicity

Ive got everything working now this is great, im now back on vector 5.01, slackware just seemed to have too much stuff for a newbie.
Vector can even detect my USB flash drive (use to have win 95 on this machine which didnt support it)

does anyone know how to get rid ot the lilo loader, I only have linux on this machine so dont need to choose other OS (i installed it coz i wanst sure) but now just want to get to the login screen staright away (rather than waiting for 2 min timout). Is Lilo nessesary for a machine with just linux on it??

many thanks

u surely need a boot loader

infact u can reduce the waiting time at lilo
check out
/etc/lilo.conf

and run lilo after you have made the required changes

regards
