firewire /vector 5.1

I've tried to install Vector linux 5.1 via an firewire cd/dvd. It boots from it but when it comes to finding the cd it stops. It seems that the support for firewire is missing. Anyone with a suggestion for what to do. I've tried the kernels that are present in the distrobution, without change.
As a comparition, Slackware with the older kernel has no problems finding it, so it freaks me out. And Mandrake/mandriva with the same kernel as Vector 5.1 also identifies it correct ? I've tried both
