I just installed xubuntu. I can not play any of my mp3s, and I do not get sound with videos. I also can not play most videos. Is this just a codec issue?
I have read that there is a special package to load all codecs for unbuntu. I assume it would also work for xubuntu.
you would need win32codecs.... if they were legal..

If you mean Automatix, you'd assume wrong. It only works with particular releases of Ubuntu, and I've not heard word of it being tried with Xubuntu tho I know it doesnt work with the latest release of Ubuntu, and therefore not the latest Xubuntu either. I'm not sure what linuxquestions policy is on this matter, since to get the codecs you need to violate copywrite law. So all I will say is check out http://xinehq.de/ .. Xine is a free media player capable of using such horrible codecs, tho it doesnt come with them and may possibly hold some answers for you ... What you'd want if you were to break these laws, are the win32codecs as well as a few others...
I installed the codecs, but I still don't get sound from the default xubuntu multimedia apps. I installed xmms, and I can listen to mp3s with that.
The video player will play the videos, but no sound.
rhythmbox doesn't seem to work at all. When I try to load my mp3 library, I just get a series of "not streaming audio" errors.
That's because rhythmbox blows goats. You can change the default by right clicking on a file of a given type and changing what programs associated with it. I dont think rhythmbox will even use the win32codecs. As for video but no audio, it's sound like your still missing a codec...
Heres an outdated howto for installing MPlayer... http://www.oldskoolphreak.com/tfiles/hack/ubuntu.txt
If you cant get mplayer to play it, it probably doesnt work in linux at all... If you have all of XMMS's brazilian links installed, and all of the essential and 'other' Mplayer codecs, that should cover just about everything... Real Player and Quicktime support are another fight... both the Real Player and Helix Player have failed to play .rm file correctly for me, and I eventualy got it to work by snagging the DLL's from a windows box and making mplayer except them... takes some trial and error but it can be done....
I am trying to play a standard mpg. I have the most recent codecs installed. xfmedia just does not play sound on my xubuntu installation. Other apps will, but not xfmedia.

I don't use xfmedia, as I said get mplayer if xine wont do the trick... but if others are actualy playing the same media types, then perhaps xfmedia has an output configuration option which needs changed. I find Alsa works better than OSS if you find the setting... otherwise dont know what to tell you except to say check out the (x)ubuntu forums about it and if no luck there try #xubuntu on irc.freenode.net and ask there..
When I try to run a wmv I get video, no audio, and this:

I have tried to load mplayer on debian before, and could not get it to work. I am about to give up, in frustration, and just delete the entire install. This sucks, I've wasted hours.
If you want to get rhythmbox to work, do the following:
Activate the universe and multiverse repositories
Install anything that begins with gstreamer from within synaptic.
It doesn't harm to have both 0.8 and 0.10 side by side and you may
skip thepackages ending with -dev and -dbg.
hth,

PS: rhythmbox is not that bad after all. Lean and fast with huge collections.
Distribution: ubuntu 6.06, Kanotix-Debian, and VISTA B2 too

xubuntu sound, but no warning messg.(wav) in FOX & TBird
...important thread,
but my prob is - I have sound in xubuntu 6.06 (Xfmedia&XMMS) but mail-notify in FOX (gmail-notifier) and Thunderbird are adjusted to .wav īs but I get nothing played, if mail arrives.
...I need some hint, if you are an ubuntu-guru or vice-guru
I have just had a similar problem
I am running Ubuntu 6.06 with Kubuntu installed.
I was trying to get Kaffeine to play one of my favourite radio stations and complained about not finding divxa32.acm. Amarok did not complain but there was no sound.
I had just installed the windows essential codecs from Mplayer (look on release codecs) but the above file was not there. I found it as win32codecs-20040703.tar.bz2
I've got just about all media working via EasyUbuntu on my Xubuntu 6.06. It's a nice script that will install all the standard things you need (Codecs, java, flash, media players, etc).
