Would like to have compiz on Kubuntu

Hi

I've been trying to get the 3D desktop effects working on KDE on K/Ubuntu 7.04 amd64, with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M card.

Having read that the closed-source ATI drivers do not support AIGLX, only XGL, I followed the beryl-project wiki (Beryl with ATI cards using XGL) and the instructions at ubuntuguide.org. XGL installed fine, and I created the startxgl.sh and xgl.desktop scripts. I never got beryl to work properly (always got a white screen), but I tested the simple, compiz desktop effects on gnome using XGL, and they work perfectly.

However, when I try to have the desktop effects on KDE, I run into problems. Having changed the startxgl.sh script from "gnome-session" to "start-kde", when I change the window manager to compiz using beryl-manager, although for a brief moment the windows do go wobbly, it fails and reverts back to kwin. I get the following error output in konsole:

Quote:

compiz.real: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/compiz/libdecoration.so: undefined symbol: decor_apply_gravity

Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"

Can anyone help me get XGL/compiz working with KDE?

Thanks

Got it working!

Here's what I did:

Quote:
sudo chmod a+rwx /etc/qt3/qtrc
( this fixes QSettings::sync: filename is null/empty )

and also updated compiz and libdecoration0 to the latest versions.
I also installed gtk2-engines-pixbuf for "GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing" and all the other packages with "pixbuf", but I 've no idea whether that made any difference.

Now I run
Quote:
compiz --replace
and voila! spinny cube!

It seems buggy though. Occasionally X windows spontaneously crashes
[EDIT - only when I press <Shift>+Backspace, for some reason.]

I have beryl working flawlessly on a 200M (well as can be expected, odd white screen on skydomes due to excessive CPU usage)

I do notice your using compiz and not beryl, but using the beryl manager.

Is that on amd64, though?
(I always just get a white screen whenever I even try to start beryl...)
