using encrypted home directory with xubuntu 9.10 live usb

Hi all,

I created an xubuntu 9.10 live usb by doing the following:

1) rsync mounted livecd image to empty /media/ubuntu
2) install grub to usb stick
3) create ext2 partition named casper-rw on usb-stick.

So now I have a live usb with persistance and more than 4GB of space for persistant data.

I created a new user, j, and disabled autologin by modifying the
15autologin file and creating a new initrd.lz file.

All is well so far, but then I wanted to have a user with an encrypted home directory. So as root I use

Code:
adduser --encrypt-home joe
and set my password etc. All should be well I would think. Doing su joe as root logs me in properly and mounts my encrypted home directory no problem. However, I cannot use the xfce graphical login as joe.

logging in as joe causes the screen to flicker a few times and then come back to the login manager.

In the file /var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log.1 I see
Code:
gdm-session-worker[5204]: pam_sm_authenticate: Called
gdm-session-worker[5204]: pam_sm_authenticate: username = [joe]
gdm-session-worker[5204]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for user joe by
(uid=0)
gdm-session-worker[5204]: pam_ck_connector(gdm:session): nox11 mode, ignoring PA
M_TTY :0
gdm-session-worker[5204]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session closed for user joe
xsplash: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

I've tried a bit of googling to no avail. Anyone know what I should be looking for, or any other log files to look in?

You could try to login in text mode.
If there are errors, you should see them.
If in text mode you login correctly, then the problem is with X.

bye
