USB flashdrive(s) not seen

If I plug in a usb flashdrive while Ubuntu is running, nothing happens, with 3 different flashdrives. If the drive is plugged in when I reboot, then everything is normal (drives plugged in and out are recognized and mounted as long as I don't shutdown.)I always safely remove the drives, never just unplug them.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop also, and I have no problems there. I just now plugged in a flashdrive into the desktop. It looks like it's being sensed, just not automounted?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Polling might be locked. You can check this by running:
Code:
ps aux | grep hal
while you have your flash drive(s) plugged in. If you see something like: hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/xxx is locked via HAL you can try restarting HAL to see if that fixes the problem. Remove the flash drive(s) first then run:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
