I currently have Knoppix installed and have it very well configured on my laptop (so many tiny things to setup properly when dealing with laptops). The thought kills me of starting over just to switch to Kubuntu. Since both Knoppix and Kubuntu are debian can I just change my apt sources file to point to Kubuntu sources and just upgrade?
Kubuntu is nothing but Ubuntu with a KDE Desktop. Since they are only derivatives of Debian, I think that your sources should point to the Debian site.
But debian sarge or 'unstable' for instance does not have Xorg or KDE3.4 nor will it for a very long time. I was hoping to point to the Kubunu deb sources so I can upgrade to Kubuntu's package release cycle.

A distro in general is nothing more than a collection of software...so I don't see how switching deb sources wouldn't allow me to gain most of the benefits of Kubutnu...like their packages. It would take a lot of work to migrate EVERYTHING over from a Knoppix install but if done slowly I can't see the harm.
Do you mind elebaborating on why you believe different distros would matter? It's not like I'm turning Fedora into Suse here.
In theory, even if not at first, over time with upgrades it should slowly morph into kubuntu. I have added a sid repository to the ubuntu package source and it works great (minus an authentication warning and a few initial bugs).

I disagree on this. I tried one day to add debian packages to Mepis which is a flavour even closer to Debian than Ubuntu is, result was disaster, 3 times in a row, to make sure that there were MAJOR incompatibilities. Warren, Mepis main developper warned against this himself in a message during install, but I chose not to care. The Mepis distro is modified and so is Ubuntu. Why do you think it is so easy to install compared to Debian ? In Debian you configure yourself, that's the difference.
If you can't see the harm now, it does perhaps prove you have been lucky so far ...

Not trying to hijack a thread or anyhting, but why are people always saying this? I havn't noticed a single differance between the Debian (Sarge) install, and the Ubuntu (Warty or Hoary) install. From what I have seen (though I've never used Mepis) Ubuntu is just a streamlined configuration of Debian. Though this isn't about meshing Debian with Ubuntu, it's about meshing Ubuntu with Knoppix, which, also, I have never used.
