Unable to install or upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04.3

I "inherited" a used-but-good HP desktop. It has Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to upgrade to a later release.

I viewed and printed the "Install Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS" information from the ubuntu.com web site. I intended to follow those instructions, step by step, to accomplish this installation. The instructions bear no resemblance to what is seen on the screen so I gave up with that line of attack and attempted to blunder my way through.

I asked Ubuntu for 12.04.3 and the download happened (or seemed to happen) in one second. Now there is a folder named /home/daniel/Downloads which contains seven files, all with names starting with ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64. Three of the seven have Type=raw CD image; the other four have Type=unknown.

When the download occurred I had a blank CD in the tray, but at no time was I given the opportunity to direct the download to that device.

I have no idea what to do with these files. Please advise.

Your download obviously failed (unless you have an *incredibly* fast connection), so personally I would delete those files and start again from scratch.

A really excellent way to download Ubuntu and other distros is using a torrent client. This will display the progress and automatically check the download for errors. (As a side benefit, by seeding, you will help others.)

Please note that you can't simply copy the downloaded file to a blank CD! You MUST use a utility that can "burn as image" as described on the Ubuntu site.

If you don't have success with the "burn a CD and fresh reinstall 12.04" method, you could also try the "upgrade-in-place" method, using Ubuntu's "Update Manager" tool. I am not an Ubuntu user so I can't walk you through it, but I'm sure they must have instructions on their site.
