Ubuntu with Gnome desktop extremely impatient...

Is there anyway of lengthening the time Gnome will wait for an app to load/perform? At the moment it's putting up wait/force quit notices in a second. What seems slow to it, seems quite reasonable to me and I'm not known for my patience...
