The 350 works "out of the box" on Ubuntu. There were some issues with making sure all the needed services were active at the correct time. I had to play with the init scripts some to make the start automagic.

I'll check when I get home - if you are just starting out, I would suggest you get 6.06 (also known as Dapper). It's the current level of Ubuntu, and has better all-round support.
The 350 works fine on it.

Just to confirm, I had a look at my setup and Dapper is the definitely the better option. I don't have any mods in place for this to work, and it works fine.
Also the interface is named more sensibly (eth1) than it was under 5.10.

After hibernating (an old Toshi Satpro 4600) occasionally the wifi won't fire up again, but "sudo ifdown eth1" followed by "sudo ifup eth1" soon fixes it.

Others will have to advise on supplicant; never used it.

Try searching on ubuntuforums.org or maybe the wiki.
Looks like Universe may have what you need.
