Ubuntu Software Centre - No Option to Install

Hi there,

Just switched from Ubuntu 11.04 to 10.04 (prefer GNOME to Unity).

I am a bit of a beginner to linux in general though.

However, when I had 11.04 the Ubuntu Software Centre worked fine... the applications just had an 'install' button which, once clicked, would install the software.

However, none of the software has this button now that I've switched to 10.04. When I click on them, the only option I get is 'Use This Source', and when I try to do this I get the error 'Failed to Download Repository Information - Please Check your Internet Connection'.

But obviously my connection is fine, hence my ability post this issue.

Any ideas?

Well the first thing to do is to see if a real package manager works. This will determine if there is a problem with just USC or if it is wider.

Try Synaptic (System>Administration>Synaptic)

If you can install a package from there then we will see what the problem with USC is.

Did you do a clean install when you went back to 10.04?

If you go into System-->Admin-->Software Sources, are you pointed at Lucid repos?

if not, fix that, and try again.
