Ubuntu 9.10 Startx failure black screen white fonts

hi guys, right firstly im totally new this linux so please bare with me!

ok i have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server edition and im now trying to install the gui (yes i know i shouldnt but it makes it easier to administer)

i first ran

Code:

sudo apt-get update

then

Code:

sudo get-apt install ubuntu-desktop

so when this failed i tried to install

after about 2 hours the installation failed with multiple messages of

Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/pool/main/x/xserver-org-video-v41/xserver-xorg-video-vmware_10.16.7-1_amd64.deb The HTTP server sent an invalid reply header [IP: 194.169.254.10 80]

when this failed i tried to install X by running

Code:

startx &

this said i needed to install something which i did, when i ran startx again i get a small black window with white fonts. im confused!

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Add other sources to your apt list and import the gpg keys through the terminal with wget and apt-key add.
if using proprietary drivers, use the xconfig tool supplied with it to setup the xserver.
