Trying to Make a Kbuntu Derivative with Cubic -- small issue with trying to change default mouse pointer

Hello all,

I have some experience doing my own Linux distributions before--not that they were anything particularly brilliant.

I am trying to make a new "version" of my distribution, which just has a few minor differences, a couple of custom made executable scripts, new wallpapers, name changes and WINE is preinstalled, basically.

The only thing I am trying to do now is change the default cursor. I might do a few more things to my "distro" but it is mainly something to share with friends kinda stuff. But I have a particular cursor I've been using on all of my Linux PC's for a long time and I was able to change it in my 32 bit debian based OS, but not here. How can I change the default cursor from a chroot environment? Such as the kind that Cubic Iso Creator uses?

I tried putting the cursor in /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
I tried changing the file for index.theme to the one that is provided by the cursor theme I want (which is moblin-cursor-theme, in case you were wondering)
I tried putting the cursor in /etc/X11/cursors

I did all of the above, tried doing sudo apt update (or apt update since it's chroot), I tried using update-alternatives to get it to allow me to change the cursor, I tried downloading the cursor package from inside the chroot environment (It doesn't show up on the apt-cache and cannot be downloaded from there for whatever reason)

I haven't ran into a roadblock like this in a long while. Any recommendations as to steps I can take to change the default cursor for my "New OS"? I feel kinda ridiculous, like I wish I just knew what I was doing wrong.

p.s.--Yes, I also tried making an .icons folder in the /etc/skel directory (which I once heard a person pronounce as "etsy-skell" and it made me giggle)

Hey all--You can delete this thread if you want but I figured it out. I decided to go and find the .deb file for the cursor theme on the official ubuntu package search website, install the deb with dpkg -i and the delete all the other cursors, setting it manually in update-alternatives as well just to be sure. Now finally it shows the proper cursor I'd like to use by default.

edit: I was jumping to conclusions too soon here it seems. I did this and now the first cursor that pops up at the "try or install Insert buntu here" screen is the one that I want, but upon installation it just reinstalls the cursors I do not want and forces me to use those instead and I still have to manually set it after installation. Infuriating to say the least.
