I have installed totem along with too many other media players using Automatix.

Totem was playing DVD's fine. It now comes up with an error message:

The audio device is busy. Is another application using it?

This always happens, even if nothing else is running. Sometimes it switches to 'AC3 passthrough' all by itself, but not always.

i think that is because the sound deamon can only be used by one program at a time. that is unless you swtich to alsa instead of oss. with alsa you can you sounds simultaneously from different programs.

Try mplayer

Just use the universe and multiverse repositories in synaptic.

Or maybe using totem-xine library might solve your problem.
