Question about installing kernel images

Hi all,

Is there a difference between using Synaptic to install new kernel images and just downloading the .deb file and using a "dpkg -i" to install them?

The reason I'm wondering is that it seems as though when I use Synaptic I don't get a choice to boot with the newly installed kernel at boot time with GRUB. With "dpkg -i" I can choose to boot with whichever I want. Maybe I'm doing somethging wrong with Synaptic.... Any ideas?

Probably, Synaptic is not interactive enough to ask that question and instead of possibly setting Grub to boot with the new kernel that you don't know for sure will work properly it does not set that new kernel as the default. When you are using dpkg -i you are asked because you are more interactive with the command. Personally, I would not set the new kernel as my default until I've booted with it once manually. Then you can change grub by editing grub.conf.

Sounds like I should stick with "dpkg -i".

The main problem is that it seems with Synaptic I don't get a chance to setup the kernel as either a GRUB option or a default option. Very confusing....
