No Sound When Playing MP3s?

Running Ubuntu 4.10 with both Gnome/KDE as desktop managers. I can play audio cds ok and it sound great.

When I try to play streaming audio and/or mp3s, I get alot of static.

I've checked xmms, and mpg123 is installed, and I've checked /dev/dsp(?) and made sure that my owner can get access to them.

What do I need to do to get sound for mp3s?

thanks

I didn't clearly understand wether it's a a software problem and in that case which software or a general OS one....

If it's a general problem with the OS (ie it affects the operating system and all audio programs) try issuing

alsamixer

and turn on all audio channels with the "m" button then exit and if it works save the configuration for next time you restart linux with a

su

alsactl

Hope it helps

All of the audio channels are on with alsamixer.

It is a software issue, because when trying to play MP3s, I'll I get is static...

I don't understand what you mean by "I'll I get static"
Anyway check that the software you are using for mp3-playback uses alsa as the output for sound.....
in xmms it's under audio I/O preferences
