No sound at all after dist-upgrade to Hardy on Dell Inspiron 1420N

Dist-upgrade killed all sound on the system. Most attempts to check sound or un-mute get an error message something like: "No GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

I've tried installing module-assistant and re-running alsaconf. Lots of folks have given browser fixes, but this is not just a browser problem. I have no sound whatsoever for anything. Won't play test sounds -- nothing.

Other folks listings of their kernel modules included snd-hda-intel. I have an Intel sound device, but lsmod doesn't list the snd-hda-intel module and dmesg shows a bunch of "unknown symbol" errors for snd-hda-intel and snd-hda-codec. "sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel" gives similar errors. I don't know if this is just the order they are loaded or if it is a genuine problem.

I have not found any fix that works. Has anyone had this problem and managed to get it working?

Jim

Make sure that all the Linux kernel related packages are for the 2.6.24-17-generic versions. also make sure linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-17-generic and ubuntu-restricted-extras are installed.
