Need help to solve shutdown issue in Ubuntu 13.10 with dual boot

I want to have dual boot in my laptop but I face some improper shut down. Here is what all I did.

Day 1:

Installed Ubuntu 13.10 Everything worked like charm except Display's Brightness. Fixed display with help of google and brightness can now be adjusted accordingly. ShutDown was working fine at present.

Day 2:

Installed Windows 7 in dual boot but mistakenly after installing only Windows 7 will boot up. Tried everything and then deleted the drive containing ubuntu.

Day 3:

Installed Windows 7 on 60 GiB. Made a 150 GiB partition for Ubuntu and remaining for storing data. Installed Ubuntu 13.10 on 150 GiB with 1GiB swap. Had to create it as logical in order to have swap area.

But on restart it gave me windows again. But this time I used Easy BCD to make an entry for Ubuntu. Everything is okay now and it has dual boot but when I select Ubuntu it again asks whether to go for Ubuntu or Windows 7. I don't want this option to come.

Secondly screen is now again not getting dim and battery backup is just 3 hours. Also when I give shut down command the laptop freezes after some dots. If I poweroff using Terminal then too I will get some code and it won't go... I mean it again hangs...

Screen shot of shutdown command.

Sounds like you just need to start from scratch. You were doing ok until you installed Windows. I can't imagine you actually need Windows.

Nest time you are running your Ubuntu 13.10, open a terminal and run:

Code:
sudo grub-install /dev/sdx
Press Enter, then when it completes, run
Code:
sudo update-grub
The x in sdx is the main drive, not a partition. That will place both Windows and Ubuntu on a level basis in the grub menu.

Hi abhishekkjain,

From what you have said it is not clear to me, whether you are using one disk drive or two.

If you are using one drive, installing windows after installing Linux, can sometimes be a problem.

I don't know that I've ever actually had it happen with Microsoft Windows 7, but when installing various earlier versions of MS-Windows, I've seen the MS-Windows installation procedure behave as if MS-Windows was supposed to be the only operating environment on the machine. If I had installed Linux first, then installed MS-Windows, the MS-Windows installation procedure would remove the "active" mark from the Linux partition, and install it's own boot loader on the drive. Sometimes all that was necessary was to mark the Linux partition "active" and re-install the Linux boot loader, from a "recovery" sort of mode on a Linux install DVD, or that type of thing.

The windows, only the first disc starts. Therefore it is better to install first. We do not know what to overwrite the boot sector, so it is better if you delete everything and start from scratch. Linux will automatically install and start your grub to choose among them.
