Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm trying to install and run mysql 4.11.2 on hoary hedgehog. Anyways, if I sudo ./bin/mysql_safe --user=mysql & as the default account, the server starts up alright. However, if I do a new login => terminal and plain ol ./bin/mysql_safe --user=mysql & as the mysql user, the server starts, stops, and dumps to bash saying something about /tmp/mysql.sock. I'll try to post more tomorrow; it seems HH is having problems opening new windows ATM.

Thanks again, and mods, if there's a better forum for this, I'd appreciate a move.

are you sure you are executing this correctly. It would seem to me that the main mysql server is only needed to start, then you would log in to the server.

IE sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start

then mysql -u username -p dbname

I believe this is all the correct syntax. But the machines server only needs to be started up, not a server for each user.

Please let me know if I am missing something.
