Kubuntu 10.04 Plasma-Desktop Malfunction after Login

I am using Kubuntu 10.04. I have been noticing few issues with Plasma-desktop lately. After restart, the system freezes at splash screen after login and it opens Yakuake and Firefox. But Kubuntu won't open any Kde applications. Plasma-desktop is also not started. I have a free space of 1.6 in my root partition. I can log into Fluxbox and openbox.

This is the content of the xsession error file. It seems that something is preventing Kde application to get initiate.

Code:

Looks like you've installed some qt/kde application that updated some of your qt or kde libraries as a dependency. Now they're conflicting with the older kde parts of your system. I'd advice you to do a full system update from the command line. Or you may consider upgrading your 10.04 version which support ended in early 2013 to either 12.04LTS or 13.04

Might be. I don't think 12.04 or 13.04 performs very well. I intend to stay with 10.04. Any other way to solve this issue. I vaguely remember that I installed some latest KDE library files and debugging tools. I try to figure out what went wrong there. Anyways thank you for pointing out the source of the problem.

Well, you can launch Kubuntu in single user mode, bring the network interface you use for connecting to the Internet up and try
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
(apt-get dist-upgrade won't upgrade the OS to a newer version, it just removes and installs packages to satisfy dependencies unlike apt-get upgrade)

If you want to update only KDE part you can try to use Kubuntu Backports PPA for 10.04.
