Angry issues post update from 18.04 to 20.04

Hi, I recently updated to 20.04 from 18.04 and am having some (minor) issues and was looking for some help.
I dont seem to be able to get rid of the 'home' and 'rubbish bin' icons on my desktop.I'm usinf Gnome flashback(metacity)
I've tried changing the settings using gsettings set, and am including here screenshots of both gsettings list-recursively | grep icons and gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.gnome-flashback
gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.gnome-flashback

gsettings list-recursively | grep icons

If I set up another user account and use the commands to remove the icons, it seems to work, but does not with my main account (which i want to keep using)

Another issue is that when I open the system settings, the window that opens is larger than my display screen (laptop builtin display) and so I have to mess about moving it and resizing before i can do anything with it (screenshot: system settings screenshot)
I'm wondering if this is an issue with the user account, and if so, how do i change the appropriate settings?

Thanks
