installing gtk+extra

gpsim gputils and gtk+extra programs will allow me to get back to pic development in the linux environment. Iam Running ubuntu 10.04 with no problems(i586). Down loaded gtk+extra-2.1.2.tar.gz extracted it in Downloads then cd into it (gtk+extra-2.1.2) and tried to ./configure with the error message
configure error; Package requirement (gtk+-2.0 >2.0.0 fontconfig) were not met
no package gtk+-2.0 found
no package fontcongfig found
There is a gtk-2.0 dir in /etc so I added /etc to the PATH--did not solve the problem got the same error message
The path I used is /home/john/Desktop/Download Should I down load it to some other directory??
Would appreciate some help and direction. Synaptic will download the gpsim and gputils without a flaw, but I have to install this gtk first.

Welcome to LQ.

'gtk+extra' : No need to download anything. You have 30,000 packages in Synaptic.

sudo apt-get install libgtkextra-dev libgtk2.0-dev libfontconfig1-dev
( Or use Synaptic.)

'libgtk2.0-dev' will provide /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc
.... which is the missing "package gtk+-2.0" config file.

And libfontconfig1-dev : /usr/lib/pkgconfig/fontconfig.pc

Packages " -dev " contains all the files required for development.

..

Can't find libgtkextra-dev. Others went just fine and now have "programming" on applications menu which opens a GUI interface that seems to be all that I need Thanks a lot.

Sorry. 'libgtkextra-dev' is Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy only.

There are libgtkextra-x11-2.0-1 and libgtkextra-x11-2.0-dev packages
for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, which would probably be usable.
( But no gtkextra for the latest Ubuntus.)

http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/libgtkextra-x11-2.0-1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/li...ra-x11-2.0-dev
