how to set the hostname?


hi, i'm about to install ubuntu! could you tell how to set my hostname. is soe has already done it on a ACER TRAVEL MATE 516 TE. THANKS for ur help.

The local host name is set in /etc/hosts. The syntax is basically this:

IP address host.domain alias

For example:

192.168.0.1 mycomputer.homenetwork mycomputer

There also needs to be an entry for the localhost:

127.0.0.1 localhost

So, the entire thing should look somthing like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 mycomputer.homenetwork mycomputer

Obviously subsitute your own machine info for this....
