Do it this way.
save the file as sources.list.old

Do not close gedit.

Go to Edit>New. Click on New and get a blank page for gedit.

Copy paste the sources.list I sent to that page.

Save that document as /ete/apt/sources.list.

You can then close gedit.

Open a terminal and run;
and see if you get any errors from that.

Hey widget, I did it, saved the file as 'sources.list.old'. Did have a little trouble with the command to save the document, after I had copied and pasted the sources.list onto the blank gedit page. There was a slight typo you had the command to save as: /ete/apt/sources.list. I tried to save it using that with no luck then thought maybe it should be; /etc/apt/sources.list. that worked. Used the next command; sudo apt-get update and this error came up:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/

Were the command suppose to do something, open or close or unlocked or locked and if any of the above why didn't it be shown what was being, closed or unlocked or for that matter opened?

Did you try running apt again? Bet it works.

I placed the Xubuntu disc in at the first prompting and pressed 'Enter' and three more times it asked for it and the Disc was already in the DVDrom/CD/RW Player. Does this look better, by that meaning all that should be there and none of those pesky duplicates?

Well that is progress of a sort.

I have no idea how this got in this shape but we will try and work through it.

I do have a copy of Xubuntu 12.04-testing on here and I will check to see where this request could be coming from.

In the mean time lets have a copy of your /etc/apt/sources.list again to see if it has picked up anything extra. Don't think so but let's check it anyway.

Now that I look at more than the error it seems you are not using the sources.list I sent you.

Run;
If you are not just cutting and pasting the command that is a lower case L.

could be the ppa's you are picking up are there. This may be the source of the error.

The ppa for "maverick Release" does not exist anymore. Do not understand how it would still be on your box at all. That is usually on for the dev release cycle and is removed at the release time for the version, in this case when Maverick was released.

Get rid of that /etc/apt/sources.list.d stuff.

You may want some of it and you can put it back latter.

Run this;
this will give you thunar as root.

Navigate to /etc/apt/sources.list.d.

When there go to File>Create Folder and click on that. This will give you a new folder in /etc/apt/sources.list.d. Name it default.

When you have that done cut/paste all files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/default.
Run;
and see what happens.

widget, here is what came up after all was said and done, using [sudo apt-get update] brackets are mine. I do not know what the two lines for the thunar mean, I just minimized the terminal and nothing else. At the end it called for the Xubuntu 11.04 disc I put in and heard it spinning for quite a few moments I removed it after awhile since it was not getting past 99%. Here is the results:

I went to close the terminal but it said it was still running and to close it then would terminate whatever it was trying to do. I then replace the Xubuntu 11.04 disc which I had taken out moments before and pressed 'Enter' what you see is the result, which I added to the end.
Was a bit nervous thunar as Root thing, especially the warning about damaging the system, which I hope does not happen?

OK. That is an improvement. At least you do not have ppas that do not exist coming up.

Now we can go back to your sources.list which you are still using. If you look at that result you will see that you are still getting the "lucid-backports". This was not in the list I sent you.

That should open those 2 files in 2 tabs on one window of gedit.

Compare them. If they are the same just report that fact.

If they are different you better post them.
