The problem is the following:
after hibernation (using the menu for turn off the notebook or the command sudo pm-hibernate in a terminal) at the time of resuming I get a black screen, even though the fans work, and I am forced to restart Ubuntu because I am not able to return to the "saved state".
I have updated my Ubuntu yesterday using Ubuntu SW Center (I think the kernel has been updated).

In the file:

I have the entry

HandleLidSwitch=hibernate
The current kernel is:

Please, can you help me?
Thanks a lot.

the first two answers have been edited in 2017, so should still be valid.

Thanks a lot ondoho,
but after following the instructions on the page you have recommended, I still have the problem. Moreover, the content in
Quote:
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
on my ubuntu, already had that entries (so, I just copied again to make sure I am not wrong!).
I am going crazy!
(Should I renounce, disactivating hibernation, and have just suspension?)

^ sorry, i'm not fully familiar with the solutions offered there.
can you please walk us through what you did there, and how exactly the problem persists?

Thanks for your help ondoho.
Some days ago, I tried to solve the problem of hibernation and, on several pages on web, the proposal was to edit the content in:
Code:
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
. I suppose this has to be done to "activate" hibernation. Now, in the menu (on the right top) for shut down Ubuntu, I can see the hibernation option, but if I try to hibernate, when I try to resume Ubuntu, I get a black screen and I cannot do anything. The command
Code:
sudo pm-hibernate
works, but when I try to exit from hibernation I cannot back to the "saved state" as I expect.
Furthermore, the issue rised up after an update done through the Ubuntu SW Center.

I hope I have been more clear.

i am unfortunately not very good with ubuntu.

looking at that askubuntu article, have you
  • run update-grub afterwards
  • is your swap partition large enough
  • you have to test with 'sudo systemctl hibernate' - testing includes reading the output received closely - in this case, it would be 'systemctl status hibernate.target' or something, after rebooting

thishttps://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubunt...hibernate.html seem to be the authoritative answer. be sure you addressed ALL points therein, then if it still doesn't work, move on to "See also".

I appreciate a lot your effort ondoho!
So, swap size is:
Code:
free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 7,7G 1,1G 5,5G 236M 1,1G 6,1G
Swap: 7,6G 0B 7,6G

Test done with 'sudo systemctl hibernate', but failed to resume after rebooting (black screen and nothing I can do)

I followed all steps indicated at that link. Even edited (again) the
Code:
etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
file, but I still can't resume after hibernation.

This issue may well be related to your graphics hardware. I note that you appear to have hybrid (Intel/AMD) graphics hardware. Which drivers are you using?

Yes, hybrid graphic (Intel/AMD).

Code:
michele@michele-ubuntu:~$ sudo lspci | grep -E 'VGA|Display'
[sudo] password di michele:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Whistler [Radeon HD 6730M/6770M/7690M XT] (rev ff)
michele@michele-ubuntu:~$ sudo lshw -c display | grep driver
       configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
The weird thing is that the issue came up after an update by Ubuntu SW Center done some days ago. Is there a way to check which update have been istalled? I would say a report or something similar.

To get hardware and driver info use
Code:
sudo lspci -nnk | grep -EA2 'VGA|Display'

It may well be a kernel regression.
