I am newbie for the forum as well as for linux. I have proposed a project for OS class to write load and run a device driver on linux. But I dont know where to start. For example if I want to show in class how to write a device driver for a wireless or webcam or digital camera in ubuntu how to start where to start?
Thanks
you may want to look at the authoring of some other drivers to see how they are configured. i am not much of a linux programmer myself, so its just a suggestion.
Where should I look for them.
Not getting pretty results with google search.
If you know of any websites where I can get the information, would be gr8
Thanks
well, i have been looking for a driver for my Lexmark Z611 printer, they only have redhat drivers, but you should be able to get one from their website. what distro do you use?
Drivers mostly live in the kernel (or are kernel modules). Hence, the best way to learn about drivers is to get it and poke around. To get the Kernel source, Ubuntu most likely has a Kernel development package that has it. If not, you can get the source from www.kernel.org.
Thanks
but I did not find anything which I really can experiment with as a newbie
I have an example http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/.../drivers_linux
this is already chosen by another student and I want something like that where I really can see that my implementations.
