Garbled Screen EVERY TIME, please help?


every time i logon, or should i say, attempt to logon, i put in my user name, then password, then the whold screen garbles up and freezes, but i can still use my mouse. can't go out to the command line after it freezes either. it does the same thing with every distribution any ideas? i assume it's a video thing but everything runs fine in windows and everywhere else.

To get to a command line, try Alt-F1. This should give you a text login. You can do this before trying to enter your username and password.

As for fixing the video, from the command line I would try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and try a different driver. Usually "VESA" works for generic hardware. Hope that helps...
