Free software downloads

I use Ubuntu and the software downloads are constant. At least every three or four days, which is no a problem but I was wondering if these downloads automatically attach themselves to the particular programs they are aimed for once you download?r?

If I have to go to DOS, I will wait until I see my 'Guru' again.

Thank You

Yes they are automatically updated and used in another new start of application. Meaning currently running program would not have got updated. Either you have reboot in some cases or close the program and start it again.
