failed upgrade to 8.04 from 7.10 missing system files from forced fsck
after a Ubuntu 8.04 upgrade from 7.10 a forced fsck was done at reboot... since then files/blocks were fixed however some system files have been lost...
Unable to load GDM and libstdc++.so.6 is missing... ...for starters...
There are countless threads detailing problems with "upgrading" to 8.04 all over the interweb.
I hope reddazz's advice sorts the problem for you, if not, the general advice seems to be "Save your personal files & do a clean install of 8.04".
I am playing with a clean install of 8.04, but it is nowhere as stable (Amarok sometimes dies and generates a bug-report email, GoogleEarth crashes KDE, and logs me out .. the list goes on, and I am not using compiz-fusion) as 6.06, which I am keeping on my "must be functioning" computers.
I had to copy sda1 /home and .mozilla profiles etc to a back up folder on sdb1
re partitioned /dev/sda and installed 8.04
worked great lost all other data files but where saved on
media_disk-1 BAK
updated and rebooted no problems...
then i added adobe flash player worked awhile on the internet...
my router paused and failed to reconnect so I rebooted and wham!!
GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 25
yep.... disk read error
