Unhappy failed upgrade to 8.04 from 7.10 missing system files from forced fsck

after a Ubuntu 8.04 upgrade from 7.10 a forced fsck was done at reboot... since then files/blocks were fixed however some system files have been lost...

Unable to load GDM and libstdc++.so.6 is missing... ...for starters...

What do I do next to fix this...

I'm new at this... so please walk me through this

Thanks

~Brad

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Try running the upgrade again e.g.
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
If that does not solve anything try
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge gdm
sudo apt-get install gdm
sudo apt-get reinstall libstdc++6

There are countless threads detailing problems with "upgrading" to 8.04 all over the interweb.

I hope reddazz's advice sorts the problem for you, if not, the general advice seems to be "Save your personal files & do a clean install of 8.04".

I am playing with a clean install of 8.04, but it is nowhere as stable (Amarok sometimes dies and generates a bug-report email, GoogleEarth crashes KDE, and logs me out .. the list goes on, and I am not using compiz-fusion) as 6.06, which I am keeping on my "must be functioning" computers.

We do have lives to live, eventually, finally.

We have tried to answer your original question "Unhappy failed upgrade to 8.04 from 7.10.." But now you have gone off at a tangent. ....
