evolution - does it get mails automatically?

Hey guys,
Ok. First I want to clarify this: Isnt evolution supposed to check for mails automatically and notify the user. If so... here is what my problem is:
I have my Evolution set up to get my mails from gmail. But for some reason it does not fetch my mail. Everytime, I have to manually open Evolution and manually get mail. I did select check-automatically option but to no use. What can be done here.

PS- by the way I have the version Evolution 2.2.1.1 - so if someone can help me how to get the latest version (without loosing my data)..it would be of great help.
thanx
