Configure startx command / tightvnc trouble

Does anyone know how I can specify which window manager/desktop environment starts when I run the startx command?

The reason why I ask this is as follows:

I have installed both kde and xfce. When I start vncserver and login to my computer I only have a grey screen and a cross as my mouse pointer. This is of course a plain old x server with no window manager loaded.

I think that vncserver issues the startx-command which in turn only loads X and not a windowmanager.

No - VNC uses a script ~/.vnc/xstartup that you can edit as you like.
For instance, mine looks like this, and I run xfce:
Code:
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
gkrellm &
xscreensaver -no-splash &
xscreensaver-command -lock &
exec /usr/bin/startxfce4

Thnx for your anser! It's a bit off topic now, but do you also know how I can configure the startx behaviour in Ubuntu?
