a. .... hope you won't be offended, but:
b. .... you must have done something wrong ...
c. .... maybe also with your router...
d. .... regular updating & upgrading is a good thing...
Thank you ondoho and everyone else very much for your help and time with my issue.
a. I am not offended at all. Stuff happens.
b. The only thing I remember doing before this happened is trying to update using the 'automatic' updater. I just find it very frustrating that the same thing happened on both computers.
c. The router seems to work just fine since my wife's mini Ipad works on it. However after I edited the /etc/resolv.conf with nameserver 8.8.8.8 this computer is very slow hooking to the internet. At least I can use it.
d. I do have a habit of keeping these computers up to date and occasionally backed up.
I thought I would have to re-install Ubuntu 14.04 or install Ubuntu 16.10 to fix this so I had better get at it.
no, please use an LTS version.
that would be 16.04 currently
I just downloaded Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS onto a bootable flash drive.
After booting to the "live" system I successfully accessed the internet but it will not access Firefox!!!
Please see connection-info.png attached.
As far as my Verizon Router, it seems to work as long as I edit /etc/resolv.conf with the addition of "nameserver 8.8.8.8 " every time I boot ubuntu 14.04.
I think your still having the same problem so lets stay with this thread.

I assume you mean intranet i.e LAN versus internet. Something like I can access the routers configuration web page but not go to google.com.
It appears that Ubuntu live is associating with your router and getting an IP address but still do not know why you can not access the internet. Must be something not working between the routers DNS and dnsmasq. Have you tried rebooting the router/MODEM. Are there any other devices on your LAN besides the laptops and ipad?
As suggested in an earlier post you should be able to right click on the NetworManager applet and edit the wireless connection. Under IPV4 select DHCP address only and then add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for DNS.

Here is the latest connection information - I re-booted and now the computer will connect /etc/resolv.conf now contains only 'nameserver 127.0.1.1'.
I don't know whether it was the DHCP address only or the 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 DNS or a combination of them both that fixed this. Speed of connection is much better also.
Next I'll try the live Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and see if this works.
Now in 16.04 'live' - I had to add nameserver 8.8.8.8 to '/etc/resolv.conf' in order to get on internet. Edit Connections won't save added DNS addresses or change DCHP info.
Comments please.

Reason: added 'Now in 16.04 .....'
Present status: After looking some more on the internet I found some reference to apt-get not working/connecting and it seems like it might have something to do with Ipv6. Some people have prevented Ipv6 from working and claim that fixed their problem. Notice below that both of these computers use Ipv6.
Computer- pollyE6410: Will access Firefox w/o having to add nameserver 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolv.conf
Network Connections: Ipv4 Method: Automatic(DHCP), Ipv6 Automatic - Nothing else filled in or checked for both of these.
See pollyE6410.png attached.
Computer - rick-Latitude-E6510 Firefox not installed, apt-get update doesn't work. Without nameserver 8.8.8.8 being added to /etc/resolv.conf. See apt-get-update-output.png. With that being added there are some 'hit' lines but mostly Ign and Err lines.
Network Connections: Ipv4 Method: Automatic(DHCP), Ipv6 Automatic - Nothing else filled in or checked for both of these.
See rick-latitude-E6510.png attached.
I don't have a clue why Computer- pollyE6410: started working. I first added the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 addresses to the DNS and it worked. Then I deleted those addresses and it still works.
Thanks all for hanging in there with me. May get this resolve yet!
Yeah, this is why I suggested testing the caching nameserver in the router with dig, hasn't happened yet ...
Just how do I do this all I have come up with so far is the IP of this computer.
I booted Computer- pollyE6410 (the one I'm using now) and I'm back to where I was yesterday morning. Same thing.
UPDATE: I found something on the internet - something like "find your computer ip"
See attached dig command output polly-ip-address.png. Is this what you want to see?
While I'm waiting for your answer I'm going to take the router back to the Verizon store and ask them about this!! maybe I can get a brand new one?
UPDATE2: Well I went to the Verizon store. Router checked out fine.
I'm now sitting in a Safeway store using their free wifi. I rebooted and ran Firefox and it came up immediately. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and it's contents were nameserver 127.0.1.1
search KrogerWiFi.lan.
Does this tell anyone anything? I hope, I hope.

Reason: UPDATES
Right now this issue seems to be [SOLVED] And I feel like a fool.
I deleted the Verizon Router from my system and re-booted both machines affected. After clicking on the Verizon Router which then showed up as a wifi choice things started working again.
I downloaded Firefox from the internet ( still having problems with apt-get - won't access all files necessary) and installed it on the rick-Latitude-E6510 computer. That now works.
Something must have got corrupted on both computers when I used the upgrade app that pops up periodically.
Simple things, eh!
Thank you all so much for helping me to resolve this issue. I know you all put a lot of time and effort in helping me.
please learn to use the ubuntu package management, otherwise we'll be hearing from you again pretty soon, because you borked your system into a frankenbuntu.
