Brother laser printer identified as an HP printer(?)

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I have a network attached Brother HL5170DN printer. The "add a printer" process locates the network attached printer and installs it. However, the printer is listed as "HP-LaserJet-4050-Series" and the Model is shown as "Generic PostScript Printer." I do not see any option to change the printer settings.

A test page again lists the printer as HP 4050 but the Description list it as "Brother HL-5170DN series" and the Driver Version as "Brother HL-5170DN series." The test page looks OK except for the line "Make and Model: Generic PostScript Printer Footmatic/Postscript" which prints off the right side of the page.

Can anyone explain why Ubuntu thinks the printer is an HP? Or how to install a Brother driver rather than the generic driver?

TIA,

Ken

You will find instructions and driver information here

-->http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/li...on&redirect=on

for your printer.

Did you install this using cups web interface? localhost:631 ?

I suspect buntu's tools are at fault here.

Thanks camorri,

This was in fact a test install on a VMWare virtual machine. I did not use the Brother installation, rather I just let Ubuntu do it automagically from System Tools; Printers.

And thanks for the tip on the cups web interface. I had never accessed that before. I will have to explore its capabilities.
