Question accessing root with/without password

I used
Code:
sudo passwd
to change root's password. However when I run
Code:
sudo su
, I see roots prompt without any password request!. If I use
Code:
su
, then I have to enter root's password (which I set with "sudo passwd").

Is my system secure?

Yes it is (at least as far as sudo is concerned). It 'remembers' the password you entered for sudo for a while. That way, if you issue another sudo command within a certain timeframe and in the same console you wan't get asked again. You will allways have to enter the root-password if you use su.
If you open a new console-session and enter
Code:
sudo <whatever-command>
you will be asked again.
