That pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter as well. Those messages at boot are a life saver when something goes wrong and you can't even boot into the system to get to dmesg.

I have nothing against "pretty" splash screens at boot, but as someone else mentioned, I'm too lazy to set them up, and they're only scrolling by for less than a minute, big whoop.

In terms of aesthetic values nothing beats those "cryptic" messages. Well, and yes they are invaluably useful
