That said there is a nice Jem Report on the subject as well that I found later, it is probably a little a more well written and adds a little more functionality than just mp3s, including divx, windows media, quicktime and other video formats. This one is called Hacking OpenSuSE: http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/178/42/

Yes, there is a binary package out there built for many other distros called xmms-mp3.
I was able to install mandrivas version in suse 10 and it works flawlessly. maybe you can look and see if mandrake/mandriva builds a xmms-mp3 package for your version of xmms (I doubt it is the same as mine) and see if it will install properly. You can always do a rpm --test first to make certain nothing goes wrong and then install it. good luck, and remember, just cause it worked for me on my system doesn't guarantee your success! //drum
I just installed SuSE 10.0 yesterday. The thing that got my XMMS to play MP3s was installing mad and xmms-lib-mad.
On a side note, it also helps to have apt-get installed & set up, if you don't already have it; that way, you can simply do a 'apt-get install mad' and 'apt-get install xmms-lib-mad' (see http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm for a tutorial on installing apt for suse).
They have next to nothing for SuSE 10, and YAST can do the same thing, just search in Software Management, far easier than using a command line with only about 15 things to search through anyways:
Sorry, that is a lot less useful than adding a couple repositories like packman, guru, and the inst extras...between those 5 I have not found a software that has an RPM that I can't find and have installed for me through YAST. Check the Sticky at the top of the page. There are tons of sources, and trust me, you can find everything that way, no questions asked.
