I have a Windows XP box on my network doing dothing but serving up files and a printer. Suse sees the files just fine. The printer is another problem.

When I try to set up the printer, I put in the workgroup, server name, and printer name all fine, and then a dialog pops up titled "Authorization Dialog" saying "You need to supply a username and password. Printing System." No matter what I try in this dialogue box, nothing works. None of the Windows user and passwords, none of the linux user and passwords, not root, not guest, not Administrator, nothing.

As far as I can tell, Windows is sharing the printer correctly. A Windows laptop sees it and prints to it just fine, without any required password.

The main thing is, I don't know what is asking for this password and what I could give it that would satisfy it. Without it, it won't connect to the printer.

Please help!

at root prompt try:
lppasswd -a <enter username>
{create password}
then try that user/password when prompted

As root at the console. Type the following:

lppasswd -g sys -a root

... and type the root user password.

Now try the printer password again.
