Unable to format suse linux

Hello All,

I am new to use linux. I installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64) trail version which is free for 60 days.

Now I want to again format the whole system and install the same OS again but its not happening.

I am trying with a bootable pen drive which has an .iso image of suse linux os and when I try to go into BIOS it doesn't even go to the BIOS. I have been spinning my head around this thing for the past whole week but still unsuccessful. It says something like ELILO boot and gives options but still finally loads the previous OS. Even when I press F2 to goto setup it says elilo boot and F12 for multi boot option it gives me the same thing. I also tried to directly launch the iso file from directory but it says autorun not found. I tried installing windows in this but to no use the same thing happens. Again I am trying with use linux but still nothing.

Kindly help me in this situation as to what to do I have tried almost everything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

you are aware that this is a server operating system
and if you are going to use it ( and not just TEST your SERVER HARDWARE ) you NEED to buy the support contract
-- just like the RHEL server operating system --

also SELS11 ( SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 11 ) service pack 3 it the current in the older 11 series

but the CURRENT is SELS 12

server os's normally do not install a GUI

so you ARE aware that this is a TEXT !!! only operating system

no desktop manager
no firefox
no music playback
no video playback

as to reformatting a drive

pop in a gparted live cd or iso on a thumb drive and reformat

but the SELS iso has a terminal text version of parted on it

but if this is the VERY OLD sels11 ( NO!!! service pack ) there will not be any support for new partition formats

Hello John,

Thank you for the prompt reply. I just plan to use the OS for the period of the trail version. Thing is I have an iso image on a thumb drive and while trying to use it to install suse, problem is the system does not boot from that thumb drive even thought it is a bootable version. The problem is the system does not go into BIOS at all even after pressing all keys. It goes into Elilo boot ( donno wtf that is ) and then linux loads up.

This is a gui version of the OS and i do have everything as a regular linux OS. What is gparted and can you tell me how to just completely format everything and put linux again.

Thanks again for the response.

Regards,
Harsha

I'm not sure which way to go. You will have to get the usb to boot for sure.

Does your computer have secure boot uefi? Is it fairly new?

Ideas to consider.

Check version.
Use a free virtual machine to run linux.
Go to SuseStudio.com and make or get what you need. There are various ways to make and install with that site. Can run your build online too.

You'd have to build a uefi usb maybe. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:UEFI

are you SURE that the image on the thumb drive IS bootable ?

how did you place the image on it ?
for a live image
Code:
dd if=/dev/yourthumbdrive of=/TheBootableImage.iso
or some other way
like using UNetbootin

IS the thumb drive BOOTABLE ?

to make a SELS usb drive
see the install guide
https://www.suse.com/documentation/s...eployment.html
for boot errors
https://www.suse.com/documentation/s...sec.instserver

also see this older thread for installing SELS sp1 from usb
https://forums.suse.com/showthread.p...-USB-Pen-Drive

if you used MS windows
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Create_a..._using_Windows

also see
http://www.techanger.com/create-bootable-linux-usb/

SELS is a SERVER operating system and NOT a Desktop OS

is this being installed on a HP blade or some other SERVER hardware

if this is NOT a server and you are NOT using to host web sites
but a HOME DESKTOP
the NOT FREE SELD ( SUSE Enterprise Linux DESKTOP ) 12 is really what you want

or WORSE a LAPTOP
SELD might not support the hardware in a laptop

or
THE FREE!!!!!!!
( and if LAPTOP better support)
OpenSUSE 13.1 Long Term Support
or OpenSUSE 13.2

Hey John,

Thanks man for the detailed reply !

I am installing it on a laptop for educational purpose. I intend to install SAP in my laptop on linux, I tried using VMWare but it was very slow and unable to install SAP on that. The version I am installing is SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications 11 SP3 as it is the recommended version for installing SAP in linux.

I had downloaded this trail version for 60 days from suse linux website and make a bootable usb drive using online software for bootable usb.

I will definitely try the way you suggested.

Thanks again for your time.

How did you get the OS on there in the first place? Repeat the process.
