hi statguy,
nice to know that the linux community is made up of guys like you. iunderstand this will take time..meanwhile i will try look up some more links on the topic.further ; i noiced something today - when the system overheats inlinux and i boot into xp - the temp does not really go down;it stays at the point where the system in linux was more or less halted...i wonder if this is something.
But i do a pure boot into xp ..no temp problems at all.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried with your Knoppix disc? Does your computer overheat running Knoppix?

rainbowarrior,

Check these out. When I was trying to fix my dsdt I thought I came across some stuff for the A60. I was right.

http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/view.php?id=354

You can download a dsdt for an A60, then this other thread will explain how to replace the dsdt.

http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=13893

Good luck.

any suggestions ?
by the way ; i tried knnopix - no overheating and i even had a go at puppy linux just for the heck of it - no problems there.
i am wondering if i should change to a different distro...

The link works for me. It does use cookies, so if cookies are disabled, you may have a problem.

The fact that Knoppix did not overheat suggests that the problem lies in the SuSE distro you have. I cannot remember which you have (is it 10.0?). Are all of your packages up-to-date?

Alternatively, it might make sense to go back to an earlier version such as 9.3. Failing that, another distro is probably in your future.

I don't know exactly what the compile problem is, but based on the first error message, I think that some header files are missing, specifically gtk.h. Do you have the gtk development package installed?

One other thing. I noticed you are compiling as root. I have often had better success compiling as a regular user and only using root for the "make install" step.

mmm

hi statguy,
Thanks for the idea. lemme check up again on the link with cookies disabled.
i have suse 10.0 ..i will update the packages today (or do you think a reinstall might just do the trick ?) if i need to move to another distro..<sigh> to think i paid for this package from novell...whatever..
for now i will try work the dsdt way.
as for gtk development - i do have them yes.
i will try compile as general user and make install as root...
lemme get back to you on the results ..
thanks statguy

If you paid for the distro, then I would think that Novell is obligated to help sort this out as a part of installation support.

support

hi statgu,
i had mailed novell installation support about a week back - no reply till date. i guess novell is tending to be like the company out of seattle -only that the latter is doing a better job.
the least they could do is reply to my mails. i will try again .

Does installation support include phone support? At this point I'd be on the phone!

Better job of what? Making money, ignoring the user, both?
