SUSE 10.1beta8 How to install Win32 Codecs?

OK the title just about says it all. How do I install the Win32 codecs for SUSE 10.1beta8? I come from the world of debian, so I have never really had to think about these things before.

top left... click on desktop> YaST> Software Mgmt>

Under search term, use:
w32codec-all

and click accept. That's it. If you don't find w32codec-all, lookup how to add installation source to YaST2... or manually dnld the RPM.

cheers

Oh dear --I don't think the previous poster has USED YAST to install software on beta 8 --It DOESN'T WORK on beta 8.

There's a new package manager for installing software now -- I can't get it to work yet and there's almost no documentation but this will improve I'm sure as we get nearer Release candidates (RC1, RC2 etc) and the 10.1 final.

Currently on Beta 8 install manually with the rpm command from a console.

Anyway what you do is first get the win32 codecs
the daily XINE build can be got from here

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

Download win32codecs, libdvdcss , libxine and, xine-ui.

change to the directory you downloaded them in and then switch to a console and type in this command for each package.

rpm -Uvh packagename.rpm

should work

If you install all these DVD playing should work fine -- you can use kaffeine as well without having to re-install it as it will pick up libdvdcss and the this (unhobbled) version of XINE with the libraries.

YAST was the OLD method of installing software. There's a new package manager in beta 8 -- I can't make it work and there's not much documentation around but I suspect that will all change as we get nearer the Release Final (or even RC1).

Cheers

OK I did that and it all went fine.

The only issue I encountered was this error:

Code:
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:xine-ui ########################################### [ 50%]
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_48x48.png': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_32x32.png': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_22x22.png': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_32x32.png': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_22x22.png': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `/usr/share/pixmaps/xine_16x16.png': No such file or directory
Has anybody got any idea what is causing this and how to fix it. Xine works, but if it is missing these image files I would like to know where to get them to replace them.

Oh and just one more question. How do I install additional software repositories that I can use with this release? Again I am used to apt-get in debian - but I have tried apt before in Suse and it didn't work out too well. I'd prefer to stick to using Suse's own native tools if possible.

just ignore it -- I got that too but it doesn't seemed to have stopped anything working.

Glad you got your DVD working.

I wouldn't bother installing too much more software with this release as I think RC1 or another update will be out before long.

The Package Manager will probably be working by then with some documentation on how to use it as well.

Cheers

No actually it isn't working. I did eaxctly as was described. But when playing back video the video is all scrambled and distorted. It doesn't matter what video I play, avi, mpeg, mpg or whatever, the results are always the same. (It looks like the images you would see from a themal sensing camera)

I tried installing Mplayer from a packman repository I found, but it gave me an error that Mplayer depended on libvgagl.so.1 which I don't have installed and don't know where to get.
