SUSE 10.1beta8 and ATI drivers installation

Hi there

Just curious to tknow if there is a good set of instruction on how to get ATI drivers installed in this beta version. I have ATI Mobility FireGl V5000 on a hp laptop.

I tried installing it last night all goes well, and it even recognized my HP branded monitor and set the resolution to 1900x1200, so I assummed it installed all the drivers with it as well. When I rebooted it booted into a balck screen.
ctrl alt f1 into cammnd prompt
#xorgconfig

But the configuration is very complex (i tried this to reset the diaply to VESA , but did not work. Kept going to FATAL error xserver.

Any suggestion to get it to get to the graphic gui and ATI driver installation?

I must say the screnshoots on this new SUSE are breaktaking...

best,
Smiley

Try this in a terminal

aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Is this assuming the installtion took care of the ATI driver and installed it autimatically after detecting my display type and grpahics card,

okay I will try this.

Dont I have to install the ATI driver somewhere first?

thanks,
smiley

find /usr/X11R6/ -name *fglrx*

The output should look like this

Quote:
linux:~ # find /usr/X11R6/ -name *fglrx*
/usr/X11R6/bin/fglrxinfo
/usr/X11R6/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh
/usr/X11R6/bin/fglrx_xgamma
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_pp.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libfglrxdrm.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.o
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_gamma.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_pp.so.1.0
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_pp.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_gamma.so.1.0
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfglrx_gamma.a
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/extensions/fglrx_gamma.h
Afterwards try

grep fglrx /var/log/messages
grep fglrx /var/log/Xorg.0.log

See what they say.

Sorry none of the commands are recognized. and could not find as the directory does not exist. Any other suggestions.

The amazing thisng is that during installtion it recog my ATI card and even the 15.4" 16/9 wideaspect screen as WUXGA. I am sure there must be a easier way to get this working after all it has done most the work.

On SUSE documentation I followed this:

boot failsafe
login root
# sax2 -m 0=vesa

but it does not allow me to configure ("display config not allowed" or something like that)

quite frustrating, open any suggestions here
Many thanks,
Smiley

EDIT: tried the chnage radeon to fglrx; suse complains that there is no such module loaded. I guess now I have to find a way to load the module to have sax2 recognize the driver????

In Ubuntu I did this to load the module:
$echo fglrx | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

and the output is normally yields is
fglrx

What is the SUSE equivalent of this? or am I barking at the wrong tree???

Hi, smiley_lauf. From your last post, it seems that you are using the "radeon" driver. This should work, but you'll not have 3d acceleration. Maybe you can post the errors in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, so we can spot the problem.

If you want to install the "fglrx" driver, chances are that at this point this will not be possible. First check what version of X you have:

Quote:
X -version
At this moment the last ati driver installer works for the 6.8 version. If you have 6.9 or 7.0 you can try but I don't think you could build the kernel module yet. Also make sure you have the kernel sources for your current kernel. You can type in a console:

Quote:
modprobe fglrx
If you see an error that it can't find the module. Then you have not build the module. Type:

Quote:
cat /usr/share/flgrx/fglrx-install.log
and post the result.

grep fglrx /var/log/messages
grep fglrx /var/log/Xorg.0.log
grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Are you typing in these commands as root?

Also, if "find /usr/X11R6/ -name *fglrx*" doesn't work, look for *X11* instead, like this.

find /usr -name *X11*

Afterwards, look for *fglrx*.

Sorry I has stepped out a bit. I am back. Just a few points of clarification.

1. If radeon will work, then why does not boot intot he gui but rather get the text login. In any case here is my /va/log/Xorg.0.log output

This is my last boot in log (after I tried chnaging from "radeon" to "fglrx" as in my respose above. I will post the "radeon' version after my next boot in and then using Ubuntu to read the log file.

2. How do I build kernel module
3. How to install kernel sources, bot above from the text command line (no gui)

Thanks for the help so far. I will update as I get closer.

NOTE: all commands run as root

# X -version
- version 6.9.0

#modprobe fglrx
- not found

#cat /usr/sharefglrx/fglrx-install.log
- no such directory

#find /usr/X11R6/ -name *fglrx*
- no such directory

#find /usr *X11* (then *fglrx*)
- X11 list of many diretcories found
- fglrx none found

Kernel 2.6.16-rc6-git1-4-smp

I hope this information helps.

your xorg.conf seems to look good despite one little thing:

put in LOAD "dri" in the "section Module". Then change "radeon" near the end to "fglrx", reboot and then it should work...

oh, maybe I did not get it right, but did you already install the latest ati-driver from their webpage (8.23.7) via the ati-installer? then run aticonfig as told by the others and check your xorg.conf for "dri" and "fglrx" instead of radeon. this should work as it did with my laptop....

Let me explain:

I am stuck at the balck screen (all these logs I am gettin gout of my Ubuntu partition that can read reiserfs SUSE filesytem)

So I have no idea how to use commandline text mode to download ati drivers and then install it in text mode (I am aware of elives text browser, and I have used it to dl ati drivers so perhaps I could do this?)

alternatively, why can't I reconfigure the xserver to get into gui mode and then use firefox to downlaod ati drivers from ati.com?

Aslo I belive I need kernel sourses, gcc and make...how do I get these when I am text mode (all the instructions say use YAST to get this, but I have no gui)

So I you could guide me step-by-step, it will be greatly appreciated.

many thanks,
Smiley

you could get the files via rpm or ftp from the commandline and yes, for sure, you will nedd the kernel-source.rpm fitting to your installed kernel, gcc, make and as far as I know it is also good to have posix installed...

you could do "ftp [server]" i.e. e.g., ftp ftp.tu-chemnitz.de" to connect to a nearby server. then you change into the directory where the rpm's reside for your linux distribution. you are also allowed to search for rpm's. then you simply say "get [file]" and you should receive it, that's it. then you install the rpm via "rpm -i [file]". look for "man rpm" in the terminal or text mode and look for the options, there is also a option to resolve dependencies...

one problem will be that you need to be in X to install the ati drivers via the installer from the ati webpage, so you should install it manually in text mode...
