suse 10.0 shuts the computer down instead of loading
hi, i'm new to linux. decided it would be a good idea to download the 5-cd install of suse 10.0 after a chat with a guy at work.
the install was successfull and no problems untill end of install where it says "install successfull, click finish to login" so i did what it said and the computer shutdown. i thought nothing of it untill i started the computer up again and after loading the same thing happend, my computer shut down.
I had no problems 3 days ago when i was using Fedora-Core 4 but suse seems to be taking the biscuit.
Make certain nothing is in the floppy or CDROM drives. When the boot sequence begins, and you have the opportunity to press ESCAPE for more information, do so.
Watch the boot-up sequence carefully to see where it is dying.
Question: Is there some service that it says it is starting and the system suddenly does a reboot? -OR- Does the system say something is awry and needs a reboot, followed by a services being shutdown?
Ok. Is it rebooting like somebody pressed reset? Or is it shutting back down like you did a shutdown -r now command?
If it is acting like somebody up and pressed the reset button, did you happen to get a glimpse of what it said it was doing just before your screen whent blank?
I do not know for a certainty, but I would venture a guess that the hardware discovery daemon might be doing this to you. You might want to check the SuSE site for hardware compatibility. I say this because not every distro uses the same daemons to accomplish a task. SuSE 9.2 used a different hardware discovery than 10.0 does. 10.0 uses one called HAL. Also, SuSE has NON-GPL drivers that it can load for some pieces of hardware, and I believe Fedora-Core is 100% GPL code (though I'm not certain about that either).
If we can discover the issue, then maybe we can get you up, as SuSE has very nice menu layouts and usage. It's why I changed from Mandrake.
Obviously, some piece of code is "touching" the power-supply shutdown on the mainboard. So it begs the question, is the motherboard configured with the power-supply commands stanard? Not meaning to sound stupid with that question, as I figure we're both pretty sure that it is. What about BIOS settings related to the pwr-supply usage? Hmmmmm...
Either the kernel or some discovery daemon like HAL is doing this.....Maybe some BIOS setting changes related to power handling is in order before we go running about re-installing stuff from scratch.
i dont think it is anything to do with the power. I have allready started to re-install the OS (i have nothing else to do) so if i still encounter the same broblem when it is finished i will try all that has been sugested.
