Steps I need to take to get my laptop internet access via a wireless card?

Hello all,

I'm positive this question has been asked before in different ways, but after hours of googling and trying things [unsuccessfully], I need some serious help in getting my SuSE 9.0 Pro laptop online with my Dlink DWL-650 card. So far I've tried modprobe wlan, then iwconfig'ing sit0, but according to a few sources, sit0 is just an ipv6 tunnel. What all do I need to do in order to get my laptop net access with my wireless card? If it helps any, my card has a prism2 chipset. I'm not new to wireless, but I am new to wireless access under *nix.

Thanks for any help
PS: Once this topic gets going, can there be a sticky made for this?

prism 2 is fairly easy. I needed to check my dmesg output and find the manfid numbers reported by cardmgr (you can do cardctl ident to find them as well)

then i added these lines to my /etc/pcmcia/config file

Card "your card" (will be different, depending on the output from cardctl ident"
manfid 0x50c2,0x7300
bind "orinoco_cs"

there is info in the lq wiki (i know, cause i put it there

the next reboot should pick it up for you (you can do pcmcia stop, pcmcia restart) then type iwconfig and it should find your card!

Don't forget to run YOU and download the appropriate firmware for your card. If they don't have it on the SuSE servers, you can normally get it from the disk that came with the card.
