nVidia and X-Server

Hi

I am trying to install nVidia drivers on my SuSE 10 OSS.

I downloaded the file through YOU, but every time I try to install it, it gives me an error message saying that my xserver is running.

What can I do to make it stop running?

Change your runlevel. As root, type "init 3" (without the quotes).

I know it is what I asked for. But now I am in the command prombt kinda thingy, and I don't know how to get back to what it looked like before. How to starte KDE again.

What command do I have to write? I tried just writing "kde" but it didn't work. (And yes I have rebooted).

Otherwise thank you. Installation ran smooth!

Unfortunantly it doesn't. It just gives me some system checks saying it is starting different things. Then it gets as far as.

Master Resource Control: runlevel 5 has been reached
Failed services in runlevel 5: network
Skipped services in runlevel 5: smbfs nfs

And then it just stops

That's odd... Try startx and if that doesn't work, the easy way out is to reboot

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Conection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

And no it doesn't help to reboot

Well, I've been getting the exact same message myself, under similar circumstances (recently installed nvidia drivers on debian 3.1 because the xserver doesn't seem to want me to have anything better than 800x600 resolution). If you haven't toyed with the x config file as per the installation instructions, you might want to try that (it hasn't helped me yet, but I'm pretty sure that's where the problem is, so maybe you'll get lucky). But then, being the newbie I am, I could be wrong...

Alright, I fixed my own problem, although I gotta admit I'm not exactly sure why what I did fixed it. Basically, you'd have to go to the command line and punch in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" (without the quotes, obviously). When you get to the one that says "Select the XFree86 server modules that should be loaded by default" make sure GLcore, dri, glx, and xtt are NOT checked (everything else should be).

Another way to do this more simply is to comment out the proper lines in your x config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config for me, but it might be something else for SUSE, I don't really know).
Hopefully this'll help you out, Twaize.
