Question Intel 845GVM-RZ - Display Problem

Hi there.

Firstly - I am VERY new to Linux and this is my first installation/experience with is so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.

I installed SLED 10 on a MECER computer with Intel 845 Chipset. The installation went fine and on reboot I get a screen complaining about the X server that cannot start and when I scratch around in the log it shows "No screens found"

I presume it means that the incorrect display drivers / no drivers are loaded.

I did some research on the web and found Linux drivers for the 845 chipset and downloaded it (1.6 Megabytes) and saved the .tar file on my other PC.

My question - how do I now get this driver installed on the Linux computer using the command line interface ?

I have copied this file to a CD which I want to use to basically load the driver from.

As I said - excuse me for asking a silly question like this but that is the only way to learn.

Thanx in advance

First, try looking at the logs.

If you are using Xorg,(the X server), then look through:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Look for text beginning with 'EE' and 'WW' (errors and warnings).
This is the first place to start.

Then, look at your xorg.conf (or equivalent, google for whichever X server you use).
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
This file is what decides which drivers get loaded for the display.

I googled for
"Linux drivers for the 845"
and ended here:
http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/install.html

Like I said, first look at the log. Then google for the error/warning messages.
(I assume you have access to another machine ..since you were able to post this)

If you are still lost, please post the error/warnings and your xorg and the output of lsmod

Thanx much - I will have a look. I also landed on the intellinuxgraphics website but the guide is for those users who would like to build the latest driver from scratch - I have the driver in .tar format on CD and basically need to load that into the system using the commandline.

Ok great - I have managed to mount the CD Rom - Copy the File from the Cd to my drive into the TMP directory and extract it.

It then creates all the directories and then I run install.sh

I then get an error "Compiler not found - cannot install"

Do I need to install a compiler to install the driver ?

Thanx

I doubt if you need to do all that. SLED 10 should have some kind of driver that works with your chipset already installed. I suspect you did or didn't do something during the install that's messing up your display. Try booting into runlevel 3 (type 3 at the boot prompt) and run Sax2 as root and see if you can set up your monitor again.

And to answer your last question, yes, you need to install at least gcc and make to install from source code.

Good morning - thanx for the info

I tried it as you said and ran Sax2 under root after using boot option 3. It gives me :

Initialising
No X Server running
Will Start own server if needed

Died at /usr/share/sax/init.pl line 619

I have formatted the hard drive and re installed and went through all the processes etc again step by step. At the end when it comes to Hardware Configuration it gives me an error on Display Drives with a message next to it "No solution".

When I start the PC again, it starts up but gives me error that X Server cannot start. In the error log is shows EE No Screens Found

Thanx much

Is that the only error in your log file? No other warnings/error?

Could you maybe post your xorg.conf and your /var/log/xorg log file?
